Slips, Trips and Falls

Slips, trips and falls are a common cause of injury for staff working in shopping centres, and also for the public.

If you see a slip or trip hazard, barricade or place signage over/around the hazard and report it IMMEDIATELY! A fall from a slip or trip can cause very serious injury and may result in death, particularly to the elderly.

Slips, trips or falls commonly come from incidents such as:

  • water on floors near outer doors
  • water around refrigerators or freezer areas of shops and in food court areas
  • obstacles in walkways
  • ramps too steep or without slip-resistant surfaces, particularly outside areas
  • ineffective lighting
  • floor surfaces treated with a finish that creates a slip hazard
  • loose mats, or
  • uneven surfaces, such as outside paths

Guidelines for Preventing Slips, Trips and Falls

  • Be aware of your surroundings. Where a client places goods in walkways, notify your Supervisor.
  • Make sure spills are wiped dry as quickly as possible. Do not leave a spill area. Radio for help if necessary.
  • Where spills cannot be wiped up quickly, place clear signs in the area or barricade to minimise the hazard.
  • Wet floors must be clearly sign posted and only washed/cleaned in times of lowest traffic movement in the area.
  • Wear non-slip footwear.
  • If you know of a slip or trip hazard such as a mat with corners turning up, dripping refrigeration, leaking roof, etc, report it immediately as a hazard.
  • Ensure any hazards are reported immediately and barricaded wherever possible.
