AUDIT & INSPECTION

The AUDIT & INSPECTION process is the practical tool used for:

  •  measurement of safety performance
  •  monitoring of safety performance
  •  evaluation of safety performance

The purpose of auditing and/or inspection an activity, process, plant or other circumstance is to:

"determine whether the event (process/practice) and related outcomes/results conform to planned arrangements, and whether these arrangements are both implemented effectively and are suitable to achieve the company's policies and objectives"

In regard to OHS, a company needs to establish a system to monitor:

  •  performance, effectiveness of operational controls
  •  conformance to policy, objectives and targets
  •  compliance with OHS legislation

Health Surveillance

Companies have an obligation to identify circumstances where employee health monitoring/surveillance is required.

This process must then be established and implemented.

Employees are required to have access to their own records.

Program of Audit / Inspection

A program and procedure for periodic audit and inspection shall be established.

The program must:

  • confirm (or otherwise) that the OHS system is being met (properly implemented and maintained)
  • confirm that regulatory requirements are being met
  • confirm the policy, objective and targets are being met
  • confirm that information is being effectively communicated and that meaningful consultation is occuring

The program of audit and inspection must take into account previous audit results, risk factors, and the scope of business activities.

Management Review

Results of audits, inspections and performance reports shall be subject to management review, improvement initiatives, consultation and communication.
